An abridged marriage certificate is a basic document issued soon after the wedding, containing essential details like names, ID numbers, and the marriage date. It is generally sufficient for couples in South Africa and may be accepted abroad with an apostille. An unabridged marriage certificate includes more detailed information and is required for travel, emigration, and foreign passport applications. If one or both spouses are not South African, an unabridged certificate is needed to register the marriage in their home countries.

A retention letter by law must be acquired before taking up citizenship in another country. If you are planning on immigrating, it is important that you first apply for a retention of your South African citizenship before moving overseas. If this is not done and you apply for your South African passport from abroad, you stand the chance of losing your status in your home country.
